The Ruby Sandal is a startling anthology of original essays, memoirs and poetry on love and femininity in the modern Middle East. Passionate and provocative, The Ruby Sandal draws upon candid interviews and original contributions from women with unique personal histories, raw perspectives and true-to-life anecdotes and contemplations on love, marriage, relationships, motherhood, cultural identity, gender violence, feminism and sexuality.

With so many global initiatives calling loudly but ineffectually for the "empowerment" of women, The Ruby Sandal makes the important and controversial point that female empowerment doesn't begin in the boardroom; it begins in the bedroom, and in every woman's psyche. It asks: "How would today’s Arab woman respond when faced with the question: What is it that you want for yourself?"
